CLASS TITLE: School Social Service Assistant

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of routine tasks assisting professional and clerical staff of Early Childhood programs, and performs related duties as required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Conducts home visits to recruit and register eligible children for Early Childhood programs, assists professional staff in assessing individual needs of enrolled children, assists teachers in planning daily classroom activities, contacts parents of students absent from school without approved causes to encourage regular attendance, recruits parents to serve as volunteers in Early Childhood programs, distributes teaching materials, takes and records attendance, maintains files of student records and reports, responds to routine telephone inquiries concerning Early Childhood programs, accompanies students, parents, and educational Staff on field trips; types simple and routine reports and records; operates photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce typewritten materialsi refers parents to social service agencies as needed; assists teachers in making presentations and demonstrations to parents; assists in serving meals and performing basic sanitation duties.

 

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS: Serves as a messenger by delivering materials to other

school units; may operate simple audio-visual equipment.

 

DESIRABLE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Training and Experience.

 

Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. equivalent. Previous experience with supervising children in an organizational setting is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills.

 Basic knowledge of Early Childhood program policies and practices, some knowledge of routine clerical procedures, some knowledge of Chicago Public Schools' rules and regulations. Ability to work with and for pre-school aged children, ability to follow oral

and written instructions. Good oral communication skills, good reading skills, some skill in the operation of a typewriter and basic office equipment is desirable, but not required.

 

Physical Requirements. Light work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally or up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demands include the ability to reach, handle, and finger objects; ability to talk and hear, and frequent use of near and far visual acuity.
