CLASS TITLE: Educational Sign Language Interpreter
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS: Under supervision, performs entry level, responsible sign language interpretation duties in connection with the CPS hearing-impaired program and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Accompanies hearing-impaired students to regular classes and makes verbatim interpretation to them of lectures and discussions in total communication; uses speech to interpret responses of hearing-impaired students to instructors and others as necessary; assists resource teachers in study classes to clarify study notes from classes at which the instructor assistant was present; assists teachers in the preparation, distribution, and filing of teaching materials; sets up and operates a variety of audio-visual equipment; operates photocopying and duplicating machines to reproduce educational materials; consults with teachers regarding concerns of individual students; may type and grade examinations and other classroom materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience. Graduation from high school (or G.E.D. equivalent) supplemented by six months previous work experience in an educational setting and demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills. Good knowledge of manual sign language principles and practices; knowledge of proper English grammar and spelling. Ability to work in an educational environment; ability to work with and for hearing-and-language–impaired students; ability to prepare and maintain routine records and reports. Good oral communication skills; good interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements. Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force frequently to move objects. Even though weight of force moved may be only a negligible amount, a position should be rated as Light Work (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing or pulling of arm controls.
